The "Channel Volume Controls" are used to control each channel's volume individually. This is useful when one party is quieter than the other. It is also possible to mute a channel by clicking on the volume icon, click again to un-mute.

Selecting "Auto Volume" hides the volume sliders but still allows the mute capability.
